"Neon Nights is all about creating a fun, welcoming atmosphere where residents of all ages can connect, play and enjoy one of our beautiful City parks," Parks and Recreation Director Andrea Schmidt said in the City of Fredericksburg's announcement of the new event. She points the invitation at residents and puts it in a park. That location holds for most of the month. Food & Wine Fest wrapped up its Marktplatz weekend on October 24. From then until the rink opens downtown on November 21, the city places nearly all of its community programming on the park side of town.
The Contest That Outgrew Its Room
The gingerbread contest shows the shift most clearly. Over its first two years, the Parks and Recreation Department's Gingerbread House Decorating Contest, run with Clear River Ice Cream and Bakery, drew about 30 participants to the John Wm. Klein Room. A city news release says that for its third year, it moves to the Pioneer Pavilion at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park and makes room for up to 74 houses. The city cites popular demand. To make room for more than twice as many houses, the contest had to leave a downtown meeting room for a park pavilion.
Registration opened Tuesday, October 27, for children ages 5 to 10 and for families. There is an entry fee, and the city supplies everything on the day. On December 8, participants come to the Pioneer Pavilion at 432 Lady Bird Dr. between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Each team gets 45 minutes, no outside decorations are allowed, children decorate with no physical help from others, and family teams can have no more than four people working on a house at once. Sign up on the city's competition page. With room for 74 houses, there are more spots than before, but the number is still capped.
The pavilion may change too. A $88,410 Pioneer Pavilion renovation is on the Parks capital list in the city's FY2027 requested budget, which was presented on July 14, 2026. A request is not the same as an approved or scheduled project, so it says nothing yet about when work might start.
November, Sorted by Address

From November 1 through November 20, Vet-Fest is the only event the city calendar places on the Marktplatz. Four Parks and Recreation events land at Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in the same stretch. On November 21 the downtown square becomes a skating rink, and starting November 24 the Marktplatz lighting is listed every evening.
What the Park Side Holds
Neon Nights on November 6 is free and new this year. The city lists a glow foam party, glow-in-the-dark mini golf and interactive games at Pavilion #5. The city suggests neon clothes, and a towel if you plan to join the foam party. Branded Burgers Food Truck will sell food, and cotton candy sales go to the Fredericksburg Police Department Foundation Fund.
Eight days later, the Ready, Set, Glow Hotts 3K brings glow back to the park as a run/walk. Registration and packet pickup run from 3 to 5:15 p.m., the 3K starts at 5:30 p.m., and the glow party begins at 8 p.m. Registration for ages 6 to 17 is $25 through race day, plus an online signup fee of $2.86. The early adult rate ended October 21. The month opens with the Heart of Texas Labrador Retriever Club Dog Show at Pavilion #5 on November 1. On November 21, the Generation Gap Tournament fills the park tennis courts from 8 a.m. to 9:45 p.m.
The park these events use has had recent work. A City Manager's update dated January 6, 2026, lists the FY2025 projects as finished: a renovated sand volleyball court, repairs to leaks and plaster damage at the Park Pool, new parking near the Tatsch House and a new roof on the Park Headquarters. The Tatsch House lot matters most for Pioneer Pavilion events, since the FY2026 budget presentation grouped Tatsch House and Pioneer Pavilion parking together. The FY2027 requests also list a $48,000 park gate. Like the pavilion renovation, it is still only a request.
The Square Changes Hands on the 21st
November 21 is the busiest Saturday of the month, and most of it happens downtown. The Visit Fredericksburg holiday calendar lists the 67th Annual Historic Home Tour and Market for that day at the Pioneer Museum, 325 W. Main St., with eight Gillespie County homes on the tour. That same morning at 10, the Marktplatz Eisbahn opens for its first day, running until 10 p.m.
The rink has a local backstory. Heritage School families volunteer to run it. Last season, the city calendar named Josie Fevig as Heritage School's Eisbahn Operations Manager and listed the beneficiaries as Lifeline Foundation for cystic fibrosis research, the Boys and Girls Club of Fredericksburg, and needs-based tuition assistance at Heritage School. The 2025–26 season charged $15 for an all-day, come-and-go pass with skate rental, plus a $10 Tuesday rate, and Heritage School's Eisbahn page lists a 10-day pass for $135. That page still carries the 2025–26 calendar, so check it for this season's rates and closing date. Last season's rink closed January 4.
On the city calendar, Thanksgiving week's rink hours run 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and again on Friday and Saturday, with shorter 1 to 8 p.m. sessions on Sundays and 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday, November 30. Christmas Nights of Lights starts Tuesday, November 24. Music starts at 5 p.m., the lighting presentation follows at 6, and the series runs nightly through Tuesday, January 5, 2027. It is canceled on two evenings: Friday, December 4, for the Light the Night Christmas Parade, and Thursday, December 31, for the city's New Year's Eve countdown.
Downtown Evenings Before the Rink Goes Up
If you want a downtown evening before the holiday crowds arrive, the newest options pour wine. Lost Draw opened The Draw, a tasting room in a restored 1911 cottage at 206 S. Lincoln St., with a grand opening on August 5, according to Texas Wine Lover. The outlet names Troy Ottmers and Andrew Sides as Lost Draw's co-founders. The same outlet's October news roundup reports that William Chris Vineyards has opened a Fredericksburg location, which sits at 101 E. Main St. That address is a short walk from the Marktplatz.
Out on U.S. 290 at Chaparral Drive, Chaparral Vin had soft-opened by mid-August, with a grand opening planned for the end of that month. Texas Wine Lover lists the owners as Rarig and Ellery Ross, Travis and Amber Jacko, and Glenn and Stephanie Geary. One downtown spot has gone quiet. Texas Wine Lover reports that Six Twists paused operations at its current location on October 11, earlier than the October 31 date first announced, and that the owners are deciding on their next chapter.
For anyone planning a gathering of their own, the city now takes reservations for the Community Room at the new City Hall at East Campus, 2818 E. U.S. 290. It holds up to 78 people and is available for weekday rentals. City fall leaf pickup started the week of October 5 and will continue as needed through winter. Rake leaves to the street, at least 12 inches from the curb.
